The Yellowtail Blue Damsel is found throughout the Indo-Pacific region. All damselfish are aggressive and territorial. The Yellowtail Blue Damsel is no exception. This is one of those fish where keeping one or three or more is the best way to go. Putting two into a tank is asking for a fight, putting three or more in a large tank works as they all seem to have to look out for the others. In this manner, no one damsel consistently gets attacked. But with all this said, the Yellowtail Blue Damsel is one of the least aggressive damselfish.
One other note, it’s often suggested that not only do you go with three or more, you should also stay with odd numbers.
This fish feels most comfortable when it has numerous bolt holes to dive into when startled. Given adequate space this fish will soon settle down into its own small territory and will normally allow any other fish to pass thru with the exception of other damselfish. This is a beautiful fish that looks stunning mixed in among live rock and corals showcased under good lighting.
